KEY STAGE 3

These are the essential skills and processes in PE that pupils need to learn to make progress.

Developing skills in physical activity

Pupils should be able to:

  • refine and adapt skills into techniques
  • develop the range of skills they use
  • develop the precision, control and fluency of their skills.

Making and applying decisions

Making informed choices about healthy, active lifestyles

Pupils should be able to:

  • identify the types of activity they are best suited to
  • identify the types of role they would like to take on
  • make choices about their involvement in healthy physical activity.

Range and content

This section outlines the breadth of the subject on which teachers should draw when teaching the key concepts and key processes.

The study of PE should include activities that cover at least four of the following:

  • outwitting opponents, as in games activities
  • accurate replication of actions, phrases and sequences, as in gymnastic activities
  • exploring and communicating ideas, concepts and emotions, as in dance activities
  • performing at maximum levels in relation to speed, height, distance, strength or accuracy, as in athletic activities
  • identifying and solving problems to overcome challenges of an adventurous nature, as in life saving and personal survival in swimming and outdoor activities
  • exercising safely and effectively to improve health and wellbeing, as in fitness and health activities.

The students get the opportunity to outwit opponents in several games activities. In years 7 and 8 girls cover netball, hockey, football, rugby, rounders and tennis. The boys cover football, rugby, tennis and cricket. In year 9 the students also get the opportunity to play basketball, volleyball and badminton as well as the other games specified previously.

Students get the opportunity to use gymnastics to replicate actions, phrases and sequences in years 7 and 8.

In years 7-9 students explore and communicate ideas, concepts and emotions through several different styles of dance.

Students identify and solve problems to overcome challenges of an adventurous nature during their trip to Lydiard Park in year 7. In year 9 students get another opportunity to experience these problem solving challenges of an adventurous nature on a trip to an outdoor pursuits centre in Pencelli, South Wales.

In year 9 students cover a module of fitness activities to cover exercising safely and effectively and to improve health and well being. Also at the start of years 7, 8 and 9 students perform a series of fitness tests and record their results to see improvement.
