Prize Giving 2006

Students at The Commonweal School are champions through and thorough and this was evident at the recent Prize Giving Ceremony in which over 370 students and parents took part in this yearly event. The applause was hearty and true in keeping with the great sense of camaraderie which is synonymous with this centre of excellence.

Before the ceremony began the school concert band and a medley of soloist entertained the crowd which included a beautiful rendition of the classic swing number ‘Almost Like Being In Love’ performed by Matt Harris, age 13, on trumpet and Nick Weaver, school technician on vocals. These quality performances were the work of the schools new music department Alison Sutcliffe Head of Music and Helen Clements her second in command. Commented Alison “We are really excited to be part of Commonweal, the students and staff are fantastic. We have many plans for future performances.”

Students not only excel in lessons but many are national champions beyond the bounds of school life. Commented Headteacher Keith Defter “ We are really proud of our students achievements. The following are just an example of our talents. Elliot Read is in the Under 16s English Rugby Union Squad, Alicia Hazzard is in the English Women’s Football Squad and Louise Hunt is six times winner of the London Mini Marathon for the disabled and is also 4th in the world in wheelchair tennis.”

Commented Eloise Harding, age 15, winner of the plaque for Dance. “ I am honored and surprised to have won this award but it goes to show that hard work pays off. I run a dance class every week and we are working towards our next event which if The Evening of Entertainment in November. When I finish my education I would like to be either a dance teacher or a primary school teacher.”

Special guest of the evening and school patron was Mark Waldron Editor of the Swindon Advertiser who sponsored the Performing Arts Award which was won by Ravneek Bains
age 16. Ravneek said she was shocked but delighted.

"It was nice to be given an award for something that has gradually developed over the years in the same way the school has developed while I have been here," she said.

She is now studying dance, economics, politics and maths at New College, and would love to become a dancer with an academic slant, such as representing dancers' right.”

“The Swindon Advertiser is proud to celebrate the achievements of all our local schoolchildren. We regularly feature the excellent work being produced under Commonweal's status as a performing arts college so were delighted to sponsor this prize. My congratulations go to our first winner Ravneek.

Having been a special guest at the prize-giving ceremony it was a pleasure to see the work of so many students across all subjects being recognised."Mark commented.
