Yr 10 - Yr 6 Dance Workshop

Science met Dance when ten Year 10 students created a dance and workshop based around electrical circuits relating to KS2 Science curriculum. The girls went into Lethbridge and Robert Le Kyng primary schools to help 120 Year six with their SATS revision, using dance as the vehicle.

The students started with a five minute performance and then held workshops to illustrate the connection between the two subject areas. One battery was illustrated by walking, two by jogging and three by running. A light bulb became a star jump and a broken circuit became a freeze position. With this firmly in place the Year 6 broke into groups of four and created their own dance using the movements they had learnt. They shared their work with one another and discussed what movements they liked and why.

Commented Louise Blake, dance teacher at Commonweal “ We have been working on this project during core PE lessons. We looked at KS2 Science and devised the dance piece around circuits and electricity. The students created the performance piece and workshop themselves. The Year 10s’ chose the theme of electricity to meet the needs of the Year 6 as a transition project between KS2 and KS3 dance. This happened a week before SATS so hopefully has helped with revision, the techniques are good for all but especially for kinaesthetic learners.”

The Year ten girls are a credit to the school, they were confident in their delivery and handled the event very professionally. “ It was fantastic, really good.” Commented Barbara Jose head of Year 6 at Robert Le Kyng.
