Yr 7 Hindu Dance/RE

In January all of Yr 7 had the opportunity to take part in workshops in Hindu dance. This was a cross curricular project with RE and Dance and is designed to give the students an insight into how Hindu’s worship though dance.

The lessons were delivered by Shamita Ray from Wise Moves and dressed in traditional costume she focused on one of the Gods the Hindu’s worship.  Krishna is the Supreme Person, the Godhead, who is always depicted playing a flute, wearing a peacock feather, and like all Hindu Gods wearing garlands of flowers. All of their Gods have animals associated with them and Krishna’s animal is a cow.

Thousands of years ago Hindu’s would have told the stories of the Gods through dance in a religious setting. These days the dances are performed on stage as entertainment. Shamita told the story of Krishna who sets out to kill the demon serpent through dance moves which the students learnt during the workshop.

Afterwards there was a questions and answers slot where students were able to interact with questions such as,’ is Krishna the god of music as he is playing a flute?’ Which he is not.  Krishna is the speaker of the Bhagavad-gita, which is recognized throughout the world as one of mankind’s greatest books of wisdom. In the Gita, as it is also known, Krishna says repeatedly that He is God Himself, the source of everything.
