Last Orders

Having piloted the first presentation of "Last Orders" at Commonweal in 2007, Solomon Theatre Company, once again delivered a powerful performance to all of Year 9. It examined underage drinking and alcohol use as part of teaching citizenship through drama.

Developed by a team of doctors, police, NSPCC professionals and teachers, Last Orders looks at the consequences of binge drinking by young people. It is written in an accessible, hard-hitting style that immediately captures the attention and imagination of its target audience. Students are shown how alcohol affects the way people think – their inhibitions, attitude to risk and ultimately their self-control.

Following the performance, specially designed workshops explored the themes of anti-social behaviour, illegal purchase, attitude to risk and sexual health (including pregnancy and STIs).

“If you drink too much you can get really, really drunk, which isn’t good. It was an interesting and informative play,” Jennifer Pour, Yr 9

“An adult women can safely drink 3-4 units per week. Men can drink 4-5 units. Drinking alcohol is good to help you socialise, but don’t take it too far. One night can have serious consequences. Excess drinking can cause sclerosis of the liver, brain and stomach damage.” Robert Sinclair, Yr 9

“The students were really engaged by both the performance and workshop. They were able to explore the issues raised and responded positively when hot seating the main characters. It was an excellent experience for all involved,” Miss Browning

“A thorough exploration of the topic and extremely well acted,” Nancy Heath.

"I thought "Last Orders" was quite funny, yet serious and showed the effects alcohol could have on young people. The workshop was good because it gave practical advice and informed us about making choices and the potential consequences of our decisons,” Abi Wood 9W1

"The play explores a lot of common myths about alcohol and STIs and raised our awareness of the issues involved. It was funny yet serious at the same time. I really enjoyed it,” Harriet Beale 9SA2

"I really enjoyed the workshop, the actors stayed in character and we were able to ask them any questions to find out their characters' motivation,” Sam Rosser 9ST2
