Yr 9 The Tempest

On February 1st all of Yr 9 ( 221 students) watched the play The Tempest. The play allowed them to see an excellent performance and to explore different interpretations of the text.

"Before watching the Tempest performance all
Yr 9 students were prepared for the play with an interactive storytelling unit passed on by the literacy consultant, Deirdre Fitzpatrick. Through active participation all pupils acted out the whole of the play whilst their English teacher narrated the plot for them. Therefore when the travelling performers came to the school all of the students were fully aware of plot, character and setting in the Tempest. This meant that greater emphasis could be put on the set scenes for the SATs exams; making sure that all pupils had a working knowledge of the performance adaptations open to them.

Overall this was a successful way of getting pupils to engage with what can be a very confusing play. I am confident that most if not all pupils have a sound understanding of The Tempest. Teaching in an interactive and kinaesthetic way means that all pupils’ needs are catered for," Clare Butler.
