Kaya Drumming
GCSE & Gifted & Talented

Kaya Drumming held a workshop in the Music Department on July 16th. Over 131 KS3 & KS4 students took part and learnt about percussion from around the world. Beside the technical aspects and the sounds of the drums, the students learnt about the cultural relevants to these percussion instruments.

Over a day the groups were split up into smaller groups and each participated in hour long sessions. The nature of splitting individual groups into rhythm sections ensured that the students worked as a team.

What are some of the benefits of rhythm based workshops?

" It encourages creative expression. Creates powerful team spirit. Promotes an individual's awareness of their uniqueness and their contribution to the group." Alex, Kaya facilitator

" Drumming promotes active listening, increases individual participation and learning capacity, builds community and dispels stress and disruptive behaviour. Drumming is good for relaxation, fosters a sense of unity and encourages self expression, resulting in a more positive self esteem." Barry Quinn - Clinical Psychologist
