Transitions Dance Project
Y10 work with Y6
Written by Ravneek Bains Y10 student

A group of Commonweal year ten students
have been on their toes for the last few months perfecting their own dance troupe which they
are taking into three of Commonweal's feeder primary schools during June and July.

This ground breaking performance called 'Transitions' is a piece based around the emotions and positive feelings felt by year
six students ( last year of junior school) on
the transition between year six and year
seven ( first year of secondary school).

It was created by a collection of year ten Commonweal students to help ease the
change between the two schools. The
workshops created for the year six's included a performance of a piece created by the year ten's with the assistance of Sue Derrick - the schools Head of Expressive Arts and Josie Williams the schools Community Arts Development Officer.

The workshop involves a one to one interaction between the year ten's and the
year six's as their feelings regarding the change are expressed vocally then physically through movement. By the end of the workshop not only have the year six's expressed their feelings about the transition but the year ten's have gained skills whereby their communication and confidence with young people has increased.

Commented Sue Derrick Head of Expressive Arts " The first workshop at Robert Le Kyng School was a huge success. Forty seven year 6 students took part and it was apparent from the buzz and the quality of the performance that they thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The Commonweal girls were professional and inspirational and we are very proud of them."

Transitions visited Robert Le Kyng School on Friday 10th June, Even Swindon School on 29th June and King William CE School on 1st July. The workshops started at 9.30am and last for one and a half hours.
