Dance Programme of Study

 At KS4, students have the opportunity to study dance through:

  • GCSE Performing Arts: Dance
  • A dance unit during compulsory P.E. in Year 10.
  • GCSE P.E. Students are given the opportunity to use dance as one of their assessed elements. This is studied on an extra curricular bases.

 Students should:

  • Be taught to perform complex and technically more demanding dances accurately and expressively.
  • Be given opportunity to create and perform dances which successfully communicate the artistic intention
  • Be given opportunities to dance in a range of styles showing understanding of form and content
  • Be enabled to record the process of composition
  • Be given opportunities to describe, interpret and evaluate all aspects of dance including choreography, performance, cultural and historical contexts and production.
  • Be encouraged to take up performance opportunities at events in school and in the local area.  

  GCSE Performing Arts: Dance

Content

The GCSE Performing Arts: Dance course serves as an introduction to studying and training in dance. It will help to improve all-round skills as well as the student’s knowledge and understanding of this art form. The course focuses on the aesthetic and artistic qualities of dance and the use of dance movement as a medium of expression and communication in the performance, creation and appreciation of dance.

Students will have the opportunity to:

  • Create dances which are then performed and presented to others
  • Study a wide range of choreographic styles and develop a breadth of vocabulary and an understanding of dance form.
  • View and appreciate dances in the professional repertoire.
  • Develop their ability to analyse and appraise movement, content and performance
  • Develop and awareness and understanding of the health and safety requirements implicit in all dance.

Assessment :

One two hour exam marked externally: 20%

A Practical exam in the form of a set study (Aprox. 1 min). The examination board provides a description of these requirements and a recording of the accompanying music: 20%

Coursework
(Performance and choreography as below): (Total 60%)

Students are required to perform in one duo or group dance: 20%

Students are required to choreograph a solo or duo: 30%

And complete an expanded programme note (700 words) about their own choreography: 10%

Five – Eighteen Years
Dance in Education:

Early Years, KS1, 2, 3 & 4, GCSE Performing Arts: Dance, GCSE Expressive arts, GCSE P.E. GNVQ Intermediate Performing Arts, AS & A2 Dance, AVCE Performing Arts, BTEC Nationals in Dance (National Award, National Certificate and National Diploma) , Community Dance Leaders Award , Arts Award.

Dance outside of school:

Youth Dance groups / companies, Dance clubs, Community dance classes, Private dance schools (e.g.) ballet, tap modern, Jazz), Dance projects

Further Education and Training
State Sector:

Degrees: BA, MA, PHD in Performing arts, dance, sports studies, conservatoire training (with professional dance training), Community Dance.

Teacher Training: PGCE in dance, P.E. Graduate Teacher Programme in Schools.

Private Sector:

Vocational Dance school, Dance Foundation Course. Private Dance School Teaching Qualifications:
Royal Academy of Dance (RAD), International Dance Teachers Association (IDTA), Imperial Society for Teachers of Dance (ISTD),

Careers in Dance
Performing and Choreographing:

Film, TV, Pop Videos, Freelance, Dance Company –Ballet, Jazz, Contemporary etc, and Live – opera, musicals, pantomimes.
