Theatrerocks did just that! 48 young people from Swindon gave up evenings
and weekends to take part in the day of drama sharing held recently at The
Art Centre.
This unique event was a partnership
project between Theatreworks, The Arts Centre and The Commonweal School with
the aim of giving young people from across Swindon an opportunity to showcase
their drama skills.
The work was originally devised
and scripted by young people between the ages of 14 – 17 years. During
the day they took part in workshops with professionals to further enhance
their performance which took place that evening on the Arts Centre Stage.
Commented James Luck, Acting Director
of Royal Bath Theatre’s youth drama group The Egg, who delivered workshops
on improving their improvising skills. “The premise of the workshops
was to give young people games and exercises for creating their own work.
Ultimately if any of the young people came away from the sessions realising
the value of their work and feeling excited about creating their next piece
then I have done a good job!”
The workshops also involved a discussion
forum which enabled the youngsters to air their views on the “Arts”
Two drama youth groups, Commonweal's
Stage Fright and Dorcan Community College were invited to perform at the Salisbury
International Festival in May of 2006.
Participating
groups are:
Stagecoach
Dorcan Community College
Stage Fright
Class Act Theatre Company,
Commonweal Arts Theatre Company
New Youth Theatre Company.
