7 Deadly Sins
KS3 Drama Club
PSHE & Citizenship

Following sessions of various drama activities the group and Miss Parsloe decided to focus on a topic to get their teeth into. The topic became the seven deadly sins. Each drama session they selected a sin and created a scene based on that sin, showed it one another and worked on them from advise given. Week by week the scenes grew, progressed and more scene were added.

This eclectic piece was then linked together through weaving connections between key characters and sinners leading to a complex
yet intriguing story line. Each scene involved characters related to a chocolate company committing deadly sins with dire consequences.

The students learn from experimenting with different drama techniques, use of minimalistic set and symbolic costumes. They explored how people’s actions can have a wider consequence in society, as they closely interpreted and communicated the following sins : sloth, greed, lust, pride, envy, gluttony and wrath. Perhaps there is a little bit of a sinner in all of us, but what happens when it is taken to extremes?

Without initial intention to produce a production this devised theatre amounted to a complete 25 minutes performance worthy of an outlet. Continuing our links with feeder schools Commonweal Drama Club took their production on tour to King William St and Robert Le Kyng primary schools.

The 19 year 7 and one year 8 dedicated drama students had an invaluable experience of performing in different venues with different faculties involving taking and operating their own lighting and sound. The year six pupils thoroughly enjoyed the performances, they were inspired and entertained and looking up to Commonweal in September.

Commented Lauren Martin, “It might sound over the top but it was a once in life time opportunity. I am really looking forward to the next production, although I know it will never be the same.”

Commented Claire Parsloe, “ The level of commitment, creativity and imagination from the drama club this year has been immense. To produce a 25 minutes original theatre piece is an exceptionally challenging task. They have worked hard throughout the year and I am very proud of them.”
