This
project was an exciting partnership between Swindon Dance, a National Dance
Agency, Artsmad and The Commonweal School, a Performing Arts College.
Ludus Dance Company is Britain’s longest established and most innovative
dance-in-education company. It combines accessible dance styles with socially
relevant topics, to create outstanding educational work alongside professional
dance performance.
Ludus came to Swindon during National Science Week, 13 – 17th March
2006, with their new show Perfecting Eugene, a funny yet poignant sixty minute
dance theatre extravaganza which explores issues of identity, difference,
ethics and genetics.
Ludus performed at Commonweal to an audience of local students from both
secondary and primary schools. Ludus also lead workshops in our school and
others in the area based on Perfecting Eugene. These workshops have dual aims:
movement aims, related to the National Curriculum, and cognitive aims related
to the themes of the show, making cross-curricular links with Science and
PSHE. Perfecting Eugene and the workshops were suitable for children (8yrs+)
and
young people.
During the residency
week, Ludus also lead INSET sessions for KS2 and KS3 science and dance teachers.
Participating schools:-
The Commonweal School
Dorcan School
Churchfields School
Greendown School
Lethbridge Primary School
Ruskin Junior School
Pinehurst Junior School

Over a hundred students from Commonweal, both
keystages and including students in the PI Unit, took part in workshops staged
throughout the week.
"We run this workshop with
schools across the UK and the Monday group at The Commonweal School has been
one of the best we have taught. Their creativity and energy was excellent!"
